MABUKI GLOSSARy

The Koi (or carp) fish is associated with good fortune, success, prosperity, longevity, courage, ambition, and perseverance. 

The Lotus is an ancient symbol representing eternity, purity, divinity, and is widely used as a symbol of life, fertility and rejuvenation. In Vietnamese culture, the lotus represents long life, health, honour and good luck. 

The Moon Gate (or circle) is a traditional architectural element found in Chinese gardens. The circle is a symbolic image of the moon representing birth and renewal. Other representations include the cohesiveness of family. 

 

Rice is an ancient symbol of wealth, success, fertility and good health. 

Lanterns symbolise joy, celebration, good fortune and longevity. They also play the role of protectors from evil.

Chinese Coins are strong symbols of wealth and prosperity.

Mandala means “circle” in Sanskrit. Mandalas are made up of balancing visual elements symbolising unity and harmony.
